Some people with learning disabilities need nursing care as well as support to lead fulfilling lives. We took over the responsibility for running this home from the local Health Authority in 1989. It is home to nine people who have various needs, more than adequately met by experienced professional staff. When the long stay hospital, Stansfield View in Todmorden, closed some of the residents moved to Gibraltar Road where they now enjoy a much better quality of life.

The transition was quite dramatic but people were helped enormously as some staff transferred from the hospital to continue supporting particular individuals. Everyone in the home has their own Person Centred Plan which is individual to them and incorporates their wishes and ambitions. Each person is respected as an individual and independence, privacy and dignity are ensured.

This friendly home is well furbished and generates a comfortable and relaxing enviroment. The main house has a newly designed raised garden area, with a shed for storage, greenhouse for cultivating veg and flowers, as well as a comfortable safe seating area.

We have recently completed a new two storey extension which now provides 7 comfortable single bedrooms within the main house, one with on suite facilities.

The ground floor of the extension (The Bungalow) is a self contained unit, which is home to two people and is seperately staffed, but still has the advantage of having Nurses available 24/7 and nursing facilities provided.

Gibraltar Road now has a fully refurbished activity room in the basement, and has employed a P/T activity co-ordinator. Classes are now provided in arts/crafts; sewing/knitting; music/movement; health/beauty; Gardening; Cookery; music appreciation and keep fit. This centre was set up mainly for the residents of the three homes, but anyone else who receives a service from the Mayfield Trust and is interested in any of the above please contact Shirley on 01422 352418.

We offer a full activity programme including various interesting outreach activities, as well as a walking group on a weekly basis .

Gibraltar Road Nursing Home have recently completed the "Gold Standards Framework in Palliative Care" and were awarded a "Commendation" in January 2010.

The excellence of this home is reflected by the Care Quality Commission and numerous compliments received from relatives. CSCI Reports
