Some people with learning disabilities need nursing care as well as support to lead fulfilling lives. We took over the responsibility for running this home from the local Health Authority in 1989. It is home to eight people who have various needs, more than adequately met by experienced professional staff. When the long stay hospital, Stansfield View in Todmorden, closed some of the residents moved to Gibraltar Road where they now enjoy a much better quality of life.

The transition was quite dramatic but people were helped enormously as some staff transferred from the hospital to continue supporting particular individuals. Everyone in the home has their own Person Centred Plan which is individual to them and incorporates their wishes and ambitions. Each person is respected as an individual and independence, privacy and dignity are ensured.

This friendly home is well furbished and generates a comfortable and relaxing enviroment. The main house has a large rear garden which includes an allotment and barbeque area for everyone's enjoyment.

Gibraltar Road now has a fully refurbished activity room in the basement, and has employed a P/T activity co-ordinator. Classes are now provided in arts/crafts; computer studies; sewing/knitting; music/movement; health/beauty; music appreciation and keep fit. This centre was set up mainly for the residents of the three homes, but anyone else who receives a service from the Mayfield Trust and is interested in any of the above please contact Fiona on 01422 352418 to check availability. These activities are not available anywhere else in Calderdale/Kirklees. We offer a full activity programme including various interesting outreach activities, as well as walking and swimming on a regular basis.

Gibraltar Road is currently completing the "Gold Standard Palliative Care Award " .

The excellence of this home is reflected by the Commission for Social Care Inspection and numerous compliments received from relatives. CSCI Reports
