We are pleased to announce the opening of our second after school club at Highbury School Brighouse.

The club will provide fun and learning opportunities for children with learning disabilities from 9 to 11 years. Activities will include a ball pool, soft play area and use of the school hall where the children can participate in arts, crafts and games of their choice and a snack tea will be provided.

We would like to thank the Children & Young People service in Calderdale for their kind donation to set up the club.

Sensory Garden Update

Wednesday 2nd April 2008 3:29 PM

New Sensory And community Garden in the grounds of mayfield house

The Sensory Garden is a major new development that is using an area of garden at Mayfield House that had become neglected over the years. The Mayfield Trust and Service Users at Mayfield House have made this area available to two other local organisations: The Next Step Trust and Ravenscliffe High School. The conversion of this unused land into a full Sensory Garden is being undertaken as a joint project with all costs being shared between the three organisations.

Grants have been obtained from: Awards 4 All,

O2 Your Community,

The Bearder Charity,

The Garfield Western Foundation,

The Beatrice Lang Trust,

VCashpoint,

Community Service Small Grants

Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation,

HBOS has provided much volunteer labour to clear the land and erect fencing and a shed.

A trained Horticulturalist from Ravenscliffe High School spends a day each week in the Sensory Garden and is co-ordinating its development.

The garden will provide both a relaxing place for members of all 3 charities as well as a place for them to practice, learn and develop horticultural skills.

In the garden we want to create a sensory area full of sounds, smells and especially colour for people with visual impairment. A working area where the residents and young people under supervision, can work together and be actively involved in the planting and growing of their own vegetables and flowers and feel a great sense of achievement. This area will be fully wheelchair accessible and will have raised beds which will give wheelchair users access to the facilities available. There will be areas of seating, a barbeque area, a pagoda, a pergola and a water feature.
